Why February 21? (Historical Background)
- The date commemorates the language movement in Bangladesh (formerly East Pakistan).
- On February 21, 1952, students in Dhaka protested for the recognition of Bengali (Bangla) as an official language.
- Several students were killed, and their sacrifice led to Bengali becoming an official language of Pakistan in 1956.
- UNESCO recognized this struggle and declared February 21 as International Mother Language Day.
